PROTECTED AREAS AND BIODIVERSITY
The aim of the protected areas system of the
Republic of Lithuania is to protect natural and cultural
heritage, landscape ecological balance, biodiversity,
genetic fund and natural resources.
Protected areas occupy 754,000 ha or 11,5%
of the whole territory in Lithuania. They consist of
4 strict state reserves, 5 national parks, 30 regional
parks, 258 state and 101 municipal reserves, 662
protected landscape objects.
According to Lithuanian Forest Assessment, by
1 January 2001 forests in protected areas occupy
380,000 ha, i.e. account for 50,4% of protected
areas and 18,8% of forest territory. In addition,
293,000 ha of forests are under restricted forestry
activities: multipurpose protective forests, urban
and recreational forests, soil and field protecting
forests, etc. Thus, the area of protected areas and
other forests with restricted economic regime totals
674,000 ha or 33,3% of the whole Lithuania’s
forest cover.
Comparing to 1 January 1998, forestry area distribution
by forest groups has changed in favour of
strict reserve, special purpose and protective forests
(I, II and III groups), which expanded from
614,000 ha to 646,000 ha over the last four years.
These forests share in total forest territory increased
from 28,6% to 29,6%.
I group (strict nature reserves) forestry area occupy
1,6%, II group (ecosystem preserving and recreational) – 12,8%, III group (protective) – 15,2%
and IV group (commercial) – 70,4%.
The Lithuanian-Swedish project “Pilot Woodland
Key Habitat Inventory in Lithuania” started in
2001. The project aim is to develop a methodology
and classification system adapted to Lithuanian
conditions, perform a pilot inventory in particular
areas, build Woodland Key Habitat (WKH) database.
Foresters, ecologists from administrations of protected
areas and NGO’s have been trained in the
methodology and a pilot inventory took place in
eleven state forest enterprises, three national parks.
In total 1821 WKHs were indicated, and this corresponds
to the area of 6,346 ha.
