On the fourth of December 2007 the Dzūkija national park, Čepkeliai state nature reservation fellowships and scientific officers, Marcinkonys main school and Ąžuolas secondary school teachers and students met together in a cosy Čepkeliai state reservation direction assembly room to commemorate Professor Tadas Ivanauskas' 125 th anniversary.

Jonas Klimavičius, the director of Čepkeliai state nature reservation, started the meeting reminding that the great naturalist Tadas Ivanauskas was born in Lebiodka, the territory now belonging to Belarus. But the life of the scientist was greatly influenced by Varėna district with its wonderful Čepkeliai swamp, the surrounding villages- Musteika and Marcinkonys, and other places of this region which Professor Tadas Ivanauskas liked and admired from his youth.

The thorough report about Professor Tadas Ivanauskas was read by
Dr. Eugenijus Drobelis, the assistant manager of Dzūkija national park who
quoted the extracts from Tadas Ivanauskas book "I made a decision".

The speaker reminded the main Tadas Ivanauskas' life and activities stages. As far back as World War I the scientist wandered to hunt in the Musteika surroundings. In 1918 Professor and his young wife Honorata arrived at Musteika village to found a Lithuanian school there. They were lucky to found it in the cottage of Jonas Miškinis. Even 14 children started learning there. Honorata was responsible for teaching.Tadas Ivanauskas organized nature expeditions for children, was responsible for visual aids and explored nature.Unfortunately, Lithuanian school in Musteika existed only one winter. When in April the Polish occupied Musteika, The professor was persecuted. That was the reason why Tadas Ivanauskas had to knock off his work , leave his students and retreat to the up-country.

Professor Tadas Ivanauskas entered scientific, cultural and social activities. He took part in the establishing Higher courses, later University where he worked as a professor. He also established Nature research station, Zoo, museum, Bird ringing station in Žuvintas reservation. He also organized scientific expeditions and preserved nature.Later while working at Kaunas university Tadas Ivanauskas visited Musteika very often, where he communicated with the locals, studied nature and its phenomenon. Tadas Ivanauskas described The Gūdų forest and Čepkeliai raistas vividly He gazetted more than 600 scientific and other popular studies.Among those more than 30 monographs, textbooks and broshures.A lot of his creative ideas about the nature of our country published some decades ago are still of great importance nowadays.

Afterwards the participants of the meeting had a great opportunity to watch the 30 minutes film "Tadas Ivanauskas"(1968). During the film they listened to Professor Tadas Ivanauskas students' recollections about their teacher. They remembered how fluently and correctly the professor learnt to speak Lithuanian despite the fact that he had not spoken Lithuanian in his youth. The young man could speak Polish, Russian, French, Byelorussian but he could not speak Lithuaniai when he was young, though he understood it.

Eimutis Gudelevičius the director of Dzūkija national park awarded a group of students for their help in preserving Dzūkija nature.

We are greateful to Dzūkija national park and Čepkeliai state nature reservation directions for meaningful socialization commemorating the 125th anniversary of Professor Tadas Ivanauskas.

The more we learned about Professor Tadas Ivanauskas, the more meaningful his words "The more you research nature the more you love it" are.
