| Climate change issues discussed Climate change issues discussed On 2 October, ambassadors of the United Kingdom, Sweden and Denmark visited the Ministry of Environment and had a meeting with the Minister of Environment Gediminas Kazlauskas, Vice-minister Aleksandras Spruogis and advisor to the Minister Laura Dzelzytė. Foreign guests were interested in Lithuania’s position on participation in the Copenhagen Agreement, particularly the issues of international funding of climate change and sharing financial commitments of EU Member States. World leaders will meet in Copenhagen this December looking for ways to reduce greenhouse emissions. One of the solutions is to set up the Climate Change Fund to pool the financial resources for the developing countries mitigating their adaptation to climate change. This would require about EUR 100 billion annually until 2020. The European Union would have to contribute about 10–30% of international aid. Recently, European leaders have been consulting each other and trying to set optimal funding options for the Climate Change Fund. The ambassadors visiting the Ministry of Environment wanted to know if Lithuania agrees to join the Copenhagen Agreement and has no objections to Community-wide taxes to be applicable to Lithuanian businesses for their damaging effects on the atmosphere. Talking to Ulrika Cronenberg-Mossberg, ambassador of Sweden, which currently holds the EU presidency, to Lithuania, Simon Butt, ambassador of the United Kingdom, and Laurids Mikaelsen, ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark, Minister Gediminas Kazlauskas said that Lithuania supports the common EU position on the reduction of greenhouse gases. Our country will accede to the Copenhagen Agreement if other developed countries also undertake to reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases and developing countries contribute according to their commitments and relevant capacity.
